Course description

This course equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively perform routine venous blood collections in clinical and community settings. Designed in line with industry best practices and infection control standards, this course prepares individuals to support diagnostic procedures within pathology services or other health care environments.

This course is recommended for registered nurses, enrolled nurses and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners seeking to expand their scope of practice, assist with specimen collection, or those working in rural and remote areas.

What will you learn?

This course covers essential skills and knowledge related to routine venous blood collection, including:

Preparing clients and equipment for blood collection procedures,
Selecting sites for venepuncture and applying appropriate techniques,
Performing blood collection using standard equipment such as evacuated tubes, needles, tourniquets, and safety devices,
Managing pre- and post-procedure care including specimen labelling and storage,
Applying infection prevention and control principles,
Responding to complications, such as fainting or needlestick injuries,
Communicating effectively with clients and healthcare professionals,
Recording and reporting outcomes in accordance with workplace protocols.

Course format

To obtain your certification, you will need to:

Successfully complete the online knowledge assessment,
Attend the face-to-face workshop and successfully complete the performance assessments, including:
- Venous blood collections using simulated training models,
- Demonstration of infection control procedures and documentation,
Complete an industry placement of at least 35 hours in an appropriate clinical setting (e.g., pathology collection centre) under the supervision of a person who currently works in a phlebotomist role for at least 18 hours per fortnight.

NOTE: It will be your responsibility to secure a suitable placement. We recommend that you secure a suitable industry placement prior to enrolling to assure that you can meet all the requirements of the unit of competency. RuralMedEd can secure a placement with a private pathology company on your behalf. However, the pathology companies charge a placement fee of up to $600 which we will have to pass onto you. Additionally, placement with a private pathology company is at their discretion. Please contact us prior to enrolling if this is an option you would like to pursue.
